Background of the Study

Economic policies play a crucial role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of any country. In Nigeria, policies aimed at economic growth, such as those focused on the agricultural sector, trade, and industry, can have significant implications for the protection and promotion of human rights. The Nigerian Constitution, along with various international treaties, emphasizes the importance of protecting socio-economic rights, including the right to an adequate standard of living, education, and health.

In Lokoja, Kogi State, economic policies implemented by local and state governments have aimed at promoting growth and reducing poverty. However, the link between these policies and the protection of human rights, particularly the socio-economic rights of vulnerable populations, is often overlooked. This study seeks to evaluate how economic policies in Lokoja have influenced the protection and realization of human rights, particularly in relation to poverty reduction, education, healthcare, and housing.

Statement of the Problem

While economic policies in Lokoja have aimed at promoting growth, there is limited research on how these policies have impacted the protection of human rights in the region. Questions remain about whether the economic development achieved under these policies has translated into improvements in human rights for marginalized communities. This study will examine the relationship between economic policies and human rights protection in Lokoja, assessing whether these policies have successfully enhanced the protection of socio-economic rights.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of economic policies on the protection of human rights in Lokoja, Kogi State.

  2. To assess the relationship between economic growth and the realization of socio-economic rights in Lokoja.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by economic policies in ensuring the protection of human rights and propose strategies to improve them.

Research Questions

  1. How have economic policies in Lokoja contributed to the protection of human rights, particularly socio-economic rights?

  2. What is the relationship between economic policies and improvements in the quality of life for vulnerable populations in Lokoja?

  3. What challenges hinder the effective protection of human rights through economic policies in Lokoja?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Economic policies in Lokoja have had a positive impact on the protection of human rights, particularly socio-economic rights.

  2. The implementation of economic policies in Lokoja has led to significant improvements in the quality of life for marginalized populations.

  3. The lack of coordination between economic policies and human rights protection efforts in Lokoja hampers the realization of socio-economic rights.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Lokoja, Kogi State, examining the impact of economic policies on human rights protection, particularly in areas such as poverty reduction, education, healthcare, and housing. Limitations include challenges in accessing government reports on policy implementation, as well as potential biases in the responses from stakeholders involved in policy execution.
